This paper contains the main results on approximation by periodic splines from the author's dissertation. The author gives a complete characterization of the strongly unique best uniform approximation from even- and odd-dimensional periodic spline spaces. The definition of alternating extreme points for periodic functions (in intervals having the period length) plays a fundamental role in the characterizations in question. In the odd-dimensional case the considered approximation is characterized alone by alternation properties of the error. In the even-dimensional case one needs an additional interpolation condition for a set placed inside the alternation intervals of the error.
