The paper considers two problems of consumer theory: the transitivity of indifference and the determination of a continuous preference by its associated indifference. Both problems are analyzed topologically through the order topology defined by partial orders. Under conditions that are claimed to be weak, indifference classes are proved to determine the continuous preference inducing them. Conditions under which a given topology is the weakest making a preference continuous are provided.
