This paper gives a new approach to S. C. Power's multivariable generalization [Linear Algebra Appl. 48, 237-244 (1982; Zbl 0513.15007)] of the classical Kronecker theorem characterizing the Hankel matrices of finite rank. The author shows how to compute the rank of a (small) Hankel operator on the Hardy space of the polydisc as a sum of ranks of Hankel operators in fewer variables but with matrix-valued symbols.
