The author examines the dynamic behavior of dissipative multi-degree-of-freedom systems under step loading. It is shown that, under some conditions, only a straight-forward nonlinear analysis can provide a valid information on the global dynamic stability, since the potential hypersurface may become very complicated. The theory is illustrated by detailed analysis of a two-degree-of-freedom model simulating an asymmetric suspended roof.
