The author constructs a plane strain model for stochastic elastic soil. Here, the Young modulus is considered to be a homogeneous random field, and the Poisson's ratio is taken as a deterministic constant. The reduction of dimensions is possible, since the stress tensor is the sum of two components: the first component is related to the plane strain state stress contribution, and the second component represents a correction term due to the three-dimensional longitudinal influence. Finally, the author presents an illustrative study of a strip foundation, where the focus is on the discussion of differences between the proposed two-dimensional stochastic model and three-dimensional finite element simulations.
