The author studies linear time-invariant BIBO-stable discrete-time systems of convolution type. It is shown that such a system is of convolution type if and only if it is complete summable, a concept which refers to the system response to sequences with specific properties. The result is a generalization of those in \textit{S. P. Boyd} [``Volterra series engineering fundamentals'', Ph.D. Thesis, Univ. of California at Berkeley (1985)] and \textit{I. W. Sandberg} [IEEE Trans. Circuits Syst. I, Fundam. Theory Appl. 45, No. 5, 578-581 (1998; Zbl 0946.93023)].
