The lateral vibration of piles subjected to dynamic excitation of machines and waves in offshore is an important problem. Here the authors analyze this problem for elastic vertical piles of circular cross-section, perfectly bonded to the soil. There is no slippage or separation at the pile-soil interface; the soil is semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium. By means of Hamilton's principle, the authors derive boundary conditions and Bernoulli-Euler dynamical beam equation with terms accounting for stretching forces. The pile-soil interaction is described by Winkler model. The solution is controlled by a non-dimensional parameter which depends on characteristics of the pile and soil, and on the loading.
