Using the multiple scale method, the authors study the parameter excitation of an elevated water tower under hydrodynamic sloshing impact. The liquid sloshing mass is replaced by a mechanical model in the form of a simple pendulum experiencing impacts with the tank walls. The system behaves like a soft system in the absence of impact, and like a hard system in the presence of impact.
