This note considers the union and the intersection of two fuzzy sets, the reference sets of which are not identical. The solution proposed for this problem is straightforward. Extend the two fuzzy sets to the union of their reference sets (assigning a membership degree of zero to all elements in the necessary extensions) and then apply the normal fuzzy operations (min, max). The note also considers the consequences of this solution w.r.t. the disjunctive sum and the difference of two fuzzy sets.
