The author introduces the so-called conditional terms by allowing such constructions as ``if \(\ldots\) then \(\ldots\) else \(\ldots\)'' over atomic equalities of terms and their negations. With this extended notion of a term, he studies such popular notions related to universal algebras as primality of algebras and congruence lattices and obtains a description of varieties (which looks easier than the usual descriptions given by the well-known Birkhoff theorem).
