Presented is a method for determining the crack length and the magnitude of a static force acting on a fault from a number of displacement readings at points on the surface. This problem reduces to a nonlinear least squares one. The modified Levenberg-Marquard method is applied to find the solution to this problem. It is shown that this solution method is robust to the effects of measurement noise.
