The authors discuss a least squares finite element method for electromagnetic fields in two-dimensional domains. They describe the Maxwell equations in a time-dependent form in three dimensions and reduce them to a two-dimensional steady problem. Based on this first-order system of partial differential equations, the least squares method is applied to the finite element method. The method allows to apply computer software.
