A transient vorticity-stream function formulation of the Stokes equations is considered. The standard finite difference approximation with Tom's boundary conditions is studied using matrix stability analysis. It is shown that the implicit schemes are unconditionally stable. Iterative algorithms based on alternating directions for solving the corresponding algebraic systems are proposed and studied.
