The author suggests a general approach for the investigation of the nonlinear dynamic buckling and stability of dissipative or nondissipative structural systems described by autonomous ordinary differential equations. The stability of such systems, if they are associated with the trivial fundamental paths, is discussed in connection with the nature of Jacobian eigenvalues. The emphasis is placed on systems with reflectional symmetries associated with unstable branching points. The analysed systems are discrete or are discretized by some approximation technique. The approach is demonstrated using two simple structural models with two degrees of freedom.
