Maximal feebly compact spaces are characterized as precisely those which are submaximal and every feebly compact subspace is closed. Special classes of maximal feebly compact spaces (countably compact, semiregular, regular) are also characterized. The authors utilize this knowledge to characterize maximal pseudo-compact spaces in a companion paper [Commentat. Math. Univ. Carol. 35, No. 1, 127-145 (1994; see the review below)]. Also forthcoming is a paper on maximal feebly compact expansions.
