Using the method of characteristics for unsteady quasi-one-dimensional flows, a computer program is developed which is capable to analyze fast transients in complex pneumatic systems. The model is based on the assumption that the fluid motion is turbulent and includes the effects of compressibility, wall shear and heat transfer. The duct walls may be elastic with an experimentally determined elastic modulus. Wave propagation effects are taken into account in ducts only while vessels, branchings, etc. are considered lumped. Numerical results are presented for two cases of relatively simple pneumatic systems. Unfortunately, however, no comparison with results obtained by means of other methods or experimental data is provided.
