Bounds for piecewise linear and quadratic approximations are obtained on a general 2D polygonal domain. These estimates depend on the geometric triangulation parameters, namely, the diameter and the maximum angle. Reviewer's remark: The English version is nevertheless rather confused and the name of Ciarlet is wrongly translated within the references.
