The author uses his \(H\)-matrices introduced in an earlier paper [Dokl. Akad. Nauk 266, 521-525 (1982; Zbl 0527.65080)] to give discrete Fourier transforms for the rapid solution of spectral problems for two- and three-dimensional Laplace equations. As an example he considers the Poisson equation on a torus, for which he sets forth an algorithm to solve the discretized problem.
