The author gives a complete list, in the sense of Arnol'd, of the diffeomorphism classes of apparent contours of generic surfaces of revolution in 3-space. Using the list, he then proves case by case that a line cannot have contact of order \(>4\) with such a generic surface and no line can be more than tritangent if the surface is generic.
