\textit{G. Tarry} [Le problème des 36 officiers, Ass. Franç. Paris 29, 170--203 (1900; JFM 32.0219.04); see also JFM 31.0219.02] proved that there is no affine plane of order 6, a result conjectured by Euler in 1782. In the present paper the author gives a purely geometrical proof of this result.
