J. Thompson developed a characterization of characters based on the famous one by R. Brauer in order to deal with a problem about the `monster' simple group. In this paper it is shown that Thompson's characterization is related to an analogue of the theory of Brauer characters for sets of primes as presented in an earlier paper by the author [Symp. Math. 13, 431-452 (1974; Zbl 0302.20015)].
