The authors give examples of pairs of complex surfaces which are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic and have small Chern numbers \(c_ 1^ 2\) resp. \(c_ 2\). Their construction relies on the fact that the canonical class \(c_ 1\) is an invariant of the diffeomorphism type of certain types of minimal surfaces [\textit{R. Friedman}, \textit{B. Moishezon} and \textit{J. W. Morgan}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 17, 283-286 (1987; Zbl 0627.57014)].
