The flow over a normal plate with a long downstream splitter plate is numerically investigated. The time-dependent two-dimensional Navier- Stokes equations are integrated in time by using a high-order, upwind- biased finite-difference scheme. In this study, calculations were made for several Reynolds numbers \(Re\) up to 500. Above \(Re=150\) the shear layer becomes unsteady and begins to breakdown into coherent large-scale vortices. Unsteady separation characterized by vortex formation, coalescence, and shedding was observed at Reynolds numbers greater than 250. Time-mean properties of the unsteady regime were calculated and compared with the experimental data.
