The author carries out a theoretical study of a family of discrete-time epidemic processes, and establishes a sufficient condition for these to follow a large deviation principle. The exit time of such processes from a particular domain, with special relevance to the extinction time of the epidemic, is also discussed. The paper begins with a statement of the main results: these are a theorem, a proposition and two corollaries. Then follows the analysis of some deterministic models, and the paper concludes with the proof of the proposition and theorem. Ten references are listed.
