This paper considers the HIV infection as a Markov chain. Some general formula for the HIV incubation period is derived. Matrix notation is used and the formulation is analytically in a form to identify it as the gamma distribution as suggested by several workers [see e.g. \textit{L. Billard} et al., Lect. Notes Biomath. 86, 21-35 (1990; Zbl 0705.62102); \textit{I. M. Longini} et al., ibid. 83, 111-137 (1989; Zbl 0685.92012)].
