For an abstract linear Cauchy problem the equivalence discrete equation is given utilizing a linear method with multiple steps; an upper limit for the energy is established. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the energy associated with the discrete equation are investigated, developing some previous results of the author [Res. Notes Math. 70, 50-67 (1982; Zbl 0496.65045)].
