The author considers the time-dependent solution of the defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Numerical algorithms are given and examples are presented. In particular a fast algorithm for the inverse scattering transform in terms of the hyperelliptic function is discussed; solutions of the nonlinear equation may be found by a linear supposition of these solutions. An analysis of the speed of the algorithms is given in terms of the number of discrete points used.
