We investigate the effect of a shock wave on the propagation of two- dimensional viscous modes in the hypersonic interaction regime. These modes are characterized by growth rates (on Mach number scales) greater than those considered in [\textit{S. Cowley} and \textit{P. Hall}, J. Fluid Mech. 214, 17-42 (1990; Zbl 0698.76073)]; accordingly, they are more dangerous from the standpoint of laminar-turbulent transition.
