The author investigates the flow in the total saturation zone around an isolated source. The law of filtration from that zone across the free boundary (the depression curve) is a control function, found by solving a variational problem. A strict global minimum of the area of the total saturation bubble is found in explicit form, with proofs of the necessary and sufficient conditions.
