A division theorem is proved for families of matrices with entries in the ring of convergent power series in several complex variables. The result is applied to study the stability of the generating matrix of a holonomic system ``in general position''. More precisely, the author introduces natural concepts of stability and infinitesimal stability for such matrices (in the style of Mather's theory of germs of differentiable mappings) and proves their equivalence.
