This paper contains a brief biography of Erich Bessel-Hagen (1898-1946), a presentation of his mathematical work and a list of his publications. The main part of the paper is devoted to the description of the estate of Bessel-Hagen conserved in the Archives of the University of Bonn. It contains many lecture notes of prominent German mathematicians and physicists, circa one thousand letters and parts of the estates of O. Toeplitz, F. London and F. Hausdorff. The paper includes 57 interesting notes and a detailed bibliography.
