The author discusses the work of F. de B. Garção Stockler (1759--1829), who published in 1819 the first national history of mathematics for any country. The author discusses this work and the career of Stockler, emphasising the influence on his of the standard Histoire des Mathématiques (1799--1802) of Montucla.
