The paper deals with the one-dimensional space grid adjustment for parabolic partial differential equations solved by the finite element method of lines. Particular attention is paid to the approach using a posteriori error estimators. An error estimator for the above method is devised and a statement of its accuracy is presented. The case of parabolic systems is also considered.
