Summary: The author uses a technique from numerical interpolation to get a discretely defined operator, which is a modification of the Lagrange operator. Therefore we improve with the linear summation method \(L_ n^*\) a result presented by \textit{A. K. Varma} and \textit{T. M. Mills} [J. Approximation Theory 9, 349-356 (1973; Zbl 0285.41003)] and we also point out a solution for a problem of P. L. Butzer in the proceedings of the Budapest conference in 1980.
