In 1925 R. Nevanlinna found his two main theorems of value distribution theory of meromorphic functions. In 1960 S. S. Chern obtained basic theorems of Nevanlinna type on holomorphic mappings between two Riemann surfaces. In the present paper, Chern's second basic theorem is extended to differential mappings on Riemann surfaces. The authors use the formula of Gauß-Bonnet and Ahlfors' method.
