The authors consider a mechanical model for morphogenesis in which a long-term traction term is included. A linear analysis of the model shows that a range of unstable modes could arise. A weakly nonlinear analysis near bifurcation points has also been performed. Potential applications of the model include the formation of ridge patterns, dermatoglyphs, and wound healing.
