The paper, based on the author's lectures at Moscow University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, is devoted to the role of Lie group theory in mathematical physics. After recalling some biographical information on Lie's life the author considers among others symmetry in differential equations, group classifications, algorithms of integration, linearization and the invariance principle.
