The author builds up a theory of estimation for sampling from a continuous universe and in particular extends the Horvitz-Thompson (HT) estimator to the continuous case. The main observation is that the inclusion probabilities get replaced by density functions and the variance and estimated variance of the continuous HT estimator get slightly modified.
