Using basic energy principles, the conductive properties of a spherical fluid droplet are related to the maximum charge it can carry before instabilities occur. The results are discussed and related to the classical results due to Rayleigh. Calculations are extended to the case of imperfect insulating liquids. The role of ionizable impurities in the fluid is also taken into account.
