An approach to construction of brittle-fracture and plastic-failure mechanics for materials subjected to compression along a system of parallel cracks, which is based on use of the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability of deformable solids, is presented. The overall problem statement for compressible and incompressible elastic and elastoplastic models is given for the case of highly elastic and relatively rigid materials; the most characteristic classes of problems are analyzed and discussed. The exact solution of the problem is cited for an infinite body, when an arbitrary number of infinite cracks are located in a single plane; results are obtained using complex potentials for linearized problems in the general form for brittle and plastic failure.
