In order to overcome the problem of constructing optimal extensions of quadrature rules, alternatives to minimal optimal extensions are discussed; in particular, the strategy for inducing extensibility by replacing nodes with suitably chosen values. The author proves a theorem restricting the number of nodes to be modified. The paper contains illustrations of extension by replacement for Gauss-Hermite and for Gauss-Laguerre rules, and also numerical examples for the application of Gauss-Laguerre rules.
