This paper deals with the numerical computation of the field scattered from a body in two dimensions due to an incident plane pressure pulse. In particular, the authors examine the process of inferring the scattered field due to one incident pulse given the scattered field due to another incident pulse. The objective is to develop an indirect method that avoids the potentially expensive direct solution of the problem. The authors' approach is based on a formula expressing the scattered field as a convolution of a kernel with the incident pulse profile. In Section 2 of the paper the prototypical scattering problem in which an incident plane pulse impinges upon a sound-soft target is formulated. In Section 3 the numerical method proposed by the authors is tested on the scattering of waves from a sound-soft circular cylinder.
