A shape metric for 3-D objects (Q1331170)

The paper presents a shape similarity measure for 3-D objects. After normalizing the position, size and orientation of the objects, the shape distance is defined via the volume of mismatch between two objects. The normalization of the orientation as the main problem is achieved on the basis of certain characteristic planes of the object and has a closed form solution. The computational techniques and some results on industrial objects are presented as well. The paper as a valuable contribution with precise mathematical definitions is recommanded to scientists and engineers.
