The authors prove, based on the concept of projective lattice geometry introduced by them in Geom. Dedicata 43, No. 3, 243-264 (1992; Zbl 0787.51004) a lattice-geometric characterization of free left modules of rank \(\geq 6\) over right chain rings. As an application of their main theorem, they prove a purely lattice-theoretic characterization of these modules in the case of Artinian right chain rings, thereby extending a result of \textit{R. Baer} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 52, 283-343 (1942)].
