Continuing the enterprise started in a series of previous works, the author, in his very personal style, formalizes his approach to continuum mechanics according to Mach and Painlevé (definition of contact forces in terms of at-a-distance interactions). A uniqueness proof is given for the stress response. A generalization of this is given to thermo-elastic bodies where the heat flux is also involved. Like in previous works of that author, the peculiar style consisting in a succession of numbered definitions, axioms, corollaries, remarks, alineas gives the false impression of an approach a la Bourbaki, which here often reduces to pure verbiage allied to an abuse of unnecessary neologisms.
