A canonical vector field \(\widetilde{E}\) for level surfaces of a non- degenerate function \(\varphi\) and certain characterizations of \(\varphi\) when \(\widetilde{E}\) is transversal are given. The difference between \(\widetilde{E}\) and the affine normal \(\overline{E}\) is considered.
