The authors provide a new computerfree proof of the existence and uniqueness of Kühnel's 9-vertex triangulation of the complex projective plane by doubly counting the incidences of certain classes of its cells. By this they also find a subcomplex of this triangulation whose incidences correspond to the 9-point affine plane over the 3-element field.
