The main result of this paper is a proof of the invariance under mutation of the Witten invariant of a 3-manifold with framed link for SU(2). As application this yields many simple examples of different 3-manifolds with the same Witten invariants, and links in \(S^ 3\) with the same Jones polynomial. Added in proof is a remark that A. Kawauchi obtained a similar result independently (no reference is given).
