A slip-line field theory for transversely isotropic materials is presented. A failure criterion, based on the Goldenblat-Koponov failure criterion, is developed. This criterion incorporates temperature dependent material parameters, transverse isotropy of the material, and influence of hydrostatic stresses on the failure of rocks and soils. The associated flow rules are also derived. The slope formulae for slip lines are obtained and characteristics of the slip lines are studied. Numerical results for semi-infinite foundations under loads are presented. It is shown that in special cases the present theory reduces to those due to von Mises, Coulomb or Hill.
