The authors invent the Möbius function for semigroups with unique factorization and show the standard theorems on inversion [see the reviewer, J. Reine Angew. Math. 266, 88-99 (1974; Zbl 0288.05007), for the definition and properties of these semigroups]. An example is given by the Möbius function of the multiplicative group of the Gaussian integers modulo units. It is applied to some function of mathematical physics.
